Say No to Circumcision!
40 Compelling Reasons Why You Should Leave Your Son Whole

by Thomas J. Ritter, M.D. and George C. Denniston, M.D.

Between 1 million and 2 million infants are circumcised in the U.S. each year.

Even Dr. Spock has changed his mind. Circumcision is not a necessary, health-enhancing procedure. Far from it. This painful and traumatic operation done during the first days of life, without anesthesia, diminishes the sexual function and sensitivity of the penis, results in thousands of surgical complications and deformities, and causes untold psychological damage, while providing dubious health benefits. This book dispels the myths that have led parents to amputate the foreskin of tens of millions of newborn boys.

Thomas J. Ritter, M.D., is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He lives in Orwigsburg, PA. George C. Denniston, M.D., M.P.H., is associated with the Department of Family Medicine, University of Washington. He lives in Seattle.

From the Foreword

It is to this challenge, presented by the widely pervasive myth of circumcision in the United States, that Dr. Ritter has magnificently responded in this fascinating and highly readable book. As a physician and surgeon of considerable experience, and a deep understanding and knowledge of what circumcision is, its history, development, secular, religious, and medical implications, Dr. Ritter is one of the first medical authorities who has taken a strong stand against the practice of circumcision. His book is extraordinarily good because it is written by a warm, humane, and very knowledgeable person, who very deeply cares for people, and especially babies, the principal victims of this archaic practice. Since circumcision is so ancient a practice, and has been widely ritualized in the United States, Dr. Ritter has set out to show how the practice originated, how it has been sustained by religious groups, and only too often by the very profession that should have been the first to protest against the practice, his own. What is so especially valuable about this book is that Dr. Ritter musters all the facts which show beyond equivocations how damaging, from every point of view and consideration, circumcision is. He shows beyond dispute how erroneous, and indeed, how damaging in their effects, are the medical claims for circumcision, all this supported by a full and convincing array of evidence, many illuminating tables and illustrations, which together make the best, and quite unanswerable case against circumcision that, to my knowledge, has ever been written. It is an achievement for which all of us should be grateful, and most of all the babies and their parents.

What the Experts are Saying

"My own preference, if I had the good fortune to have another son, would be to leave his little penis alone."

Benjamin Spock, M.D.
author, Baby and Child Care

"...no one is aware of the deep implications and life-lasting effect (of circumcision). The torture is experienced in a state of total helplessness which makes it even more frightening and unbearable."
